In today’s article, I’m going to show you some things that you can check if you have a LiftMaster keypad for your garage door and it’s not working.
Before We Begin
- Safety Precautions: If you’re entering your pin code and you’re hitting the Enter button and the garage door is not opening, or when you’re trying to shut the garage door, if you just hit the Enter button and the garage door doesn’t close. I’m going to show you some things that we can check to find out why it may not be working.
- Additional Resources: Then I’m also going to show you how to replace the keypad if your keypad is broken and you need to do that. Before we begin, though, whenever you’re working with garage doors, you want to make sure that you’re wearing the proper safety equipment. For this job, I have on a pair of nitrile gloves and safety glasses, and you want to make sure that you take all safety precautions.
Reading the Manual
- Owner’s Manual: Make sure to read through the owner’s manual for your garage door key for all of the specific instructions to find out why your keypad may not be working.
Initial Check: Keypad Battery Power
- Daytime Visibility: The first thing that you want to check is if the keypad has battery power. If you’re in the daytime, it’s going to be harder to see.
- Nighttime Visibility: If it’s at nighttime, it would be easier to see. But if you hit one of these buttons here, the keypad should light up.
- Light-Up Confirmation: We can see that when we hit a button, we can see in this case the keypad is lighting up. We know that it at least has some battery power.
Possible Battery Issue
- Low Battery Symptoms: There’s still a chance that even though the keypad is lighting up, it may only be lighting up a little bit. There’s a chance that the battery is still bad, and that’s an easy enough thing to be able to replace.
Replacing the Battery
- Accessing the Battery: At the bottom of the keypad, there’s a door here, and if you put a little bit of pressure on it and then push down, the door will come off like so.
- Nine Volt Battery: And then here is the nine-volt battery that supplies power to the keypad. You can try replacing the nine-volt battery to see if that fixes the problem and your keypad starts working.
- Reassembling: Then to put the door back on, you just line it up.
Caution with Battery Door
- Previous Damage: I want to show you guys this. You can see at some point in time, somebody probably used a flathead screwdriver to pry the battery door away from the LiftMaster keypad, and you can see that it damaged the plastic there.
- Gentle Approach: If what I showed you doesn’t work by putting a little bit of pressure on the battery cover and then pushing down to remove it. If you do need to use a flathead screwdriver to get the battery door away from the LiftMaster keypad, you just want to be really gentle, because whenever you do use metal on plastic, there’s just a high chance that you’re going to damage the plastic, which looks like happened in this case.
Testing Each Button
- Button Functionality: Another thing that we can check to see if the keypad is working is to press each of the buttons and see if the keypad lights up.
- Indicator for Non-Functioning Buttons: If you do get to a button that doesn’t light up the keypad, that’s an indication that that button is not working. That may be the reason that your garage door is not opening when you enter your pin code.
Deciding on a Solution
- Pin Code Change: From there, you’ll have to decide if you want to change your pin code to something different that doesn’t use that number.
- Keypad Replacement: Or if you want to replace your keypad.
When to Replace the Keypad
- Non-Responsive Keypad: The other possibility is no matter which button that you’re pressing that it doesn’t light up the keypad after you’ve changed out the battery for a new nine-volt battery, and that’s an indication that the keypad does need to be replaced.
Finding a Replacement
- Purchase Options: If you do need to replace your keypad, you can find the LiftMaster keypads online, and prices do vary.
How to Replace the Keypad
Removing the Battery Door
- Removal Steps: The first thing we need to do is to remove the battery door. To do that again, we just want to put a little bit of pressure on the battery door and then push down, and the battery door will come off.
Removing the Battery
- Battery Removal: Then we’re going to take out the nine-volt battery. There we go. I’m just going to set that to the side.
Unscrewing the Keypad
- Accessing the Screw: Then there’s a Phillips head screw in here, and we need to take that out. I have a Phillips head screwdriver, and we’re just taking this screw out.
Replacing the Keypad
- Lifting and Sliding: Then from here, we can just lift the keypad up gently, like so, and it will slide off the screw that’s right here.
- Alignment: You want to make sure to match everything up, because as you saw there, they paint around this when they paint, so you don’t want any unpainted wood showing.
Reinstalling Components
- Screw Tightening: Let’s make sure that this screw is tight. You want the screw tight, but you don’t want to overtighten it because you don’t want to strip out the wood and not have this screw be able to secure the keypad in place.
- Battery Reinstallation: The next thing we’re going to do is to reinstall the nine-volt battery.
- Battery Door Reinstallation: The next thing we’re going to do is to reinstall the battery door, and we just fit that on here like so, and then gently push up until it is all the way in place like so.
Programming the New Keypad
- Programming Requirement: Then for a new keypad, you’re going to have to program it to your garage door. I do have a video where I show how to do that, so I’m going to link that video at the end of this one. If you’re interested and have time, please check that video out.
