Compatibility and Devices

I’m going to upgrade the firmware of JBL Flip 5, but the upgrade process is the same on JBL Flip, JBL Extreme, and JBL Charge models and the firmware upgrade will be done through iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

Preparation for Upgrade

And to make sure the entire process will be done successfully and easily, we need to do the following things:

  • Fully Charged Device: We need fully charged JBL Flip 5
  • Stable Internet Connection: Your phone should be connected to a stable Internet connection
  • Pairing: Pair between JBL speaker and your smartphone
  • Proximity: Keep JBL speaker close to your smartphone during the entire upgrade process

Downloading the JBL Connect App

  • Go to Play Store or App Store and search for JBL Connect app.
  • Install it and at the end of the process open the app.
  • To use the app, we need to agree to the usage terms of JBL by clicking on the accept button.

Recognizing the Speaker

The app will try to recognize your JBL speaker and during the process, you will be asked to grant permission to connect your speaker. So click allow and allow using the device’s location service.

Checking for Updates

When the app connects to your JBL speaker, it will recognize its model and the current software version. If a software update is available, then after a few seconds, the status will be changed to ‘Software Update Available‘. Press it to continue.

Understanding the Benefits

In the next step, it will show you how the new software update will benefit your JBL speaker. To continue, press on update.

Upgrade Process

Phase 1: Transferring

  • The first phase is transferring, and you will receive an estimated time until the process is completed.
  • It can take some time, so keep the app open and keep JBL speaker and your smartphone close to each other as much as possible.

Phase 2: Updating

  • The final phase is update. During this process, your JBL speaker will turn off and then turn on again.
  • At the end of the update process, you will receive a message: ‘Update successful, you’re set‘. Press on the left party button as now you can use your JBL speaker.
